For most retail stores, a display case between 36 to 48 inches wide, 18 to 24 inches deep, and 36 inches high works best. But the right size really depends on three things—your products, your floor space, and your customers.

Here is what you need to know before you buy.

Start by Measuring Your Space

Grab a tape measure. Walk your store floor.

You need three numbers: length, width, and height of the spot where the case will go. Do not guess. Do not eyeball it. Write it down.

A critical rule: leave at least 36 inches of clear aisle space around your display cases. That is the ADA minimum requirement in the US. Tight aisles block wheelchair access and make customers feel cramped. If your aisles are narrow, go with a smaller case or a wall-mounted option.

For wall placement, wider cases with shallow depths (18–24 inches) work best. For center-floor layouts where customers walk around all sides, deeper cases (24–30 inches) give you more display space.

Match the Case to Your Products

Your products determine the size you need. Here is a quick breakdown:

Product TypeRecommended DepthRecommended WidthNotes
Jewelry, watches, small accessories12–18 inches24–48 inchesShallow cases let customers see everything clearly
Electronics, phones, small gadgets16–20 inches36–48 inchesStandard countertop size works well
Clothing, garments, larger items24–30 inches48–60 inchesNeed depth for hanging or folded items
Bakery, deli, food items24–30 inches50–78 inchesCommercial food cases run wider
General retail, mixed products18–24 inches36–48 inchesMost common all-purpose size

Also think about clearance. If you are displaying small collectibles, leave at least 2–5 cm of space around each item. For larger pieces, leave 7–15 cm so they do not look cramped

Countertop vs. Freestanding—Which One Fits?

Countertop display cases sit on existing counters or tables. Standard widths are around 24 inches. These work great for checkout areas, small boutiques, or stores with limited floor space.

Freestanding display cases stand on the floor. Popular widths range from 28 to 44 inches. Some go up to 48 inches or wider. These are your best bet for larger stores or high-value merchandise that needs more visibility.

Wall-mounted cases save floor space entirely. Mount the bottom 33 to 40 inches above the floor—36 inches is the preferred height for ADA compliance

Height Matters—For You and Your Customers

Get the height wrong and your customers will not see your products. Get it right and they will stop and look.

For standing customers (most retail settings), the ideal viewing height is 36 to 42 inches. This puts products at natural eye level.

For seated or bending customers, go lower—32 to 40 inches.

ADA requirement: at least one accessible display surface must be no higher than 36 inches. This ensures wheelchair users can see and reach your products.

Most standard counter display cases run 950mm to 1000mm (about 37–39 inches) in height. That is a safe starting point for most stores.Think About Customer Flow

Your display case should guide traffic, not block it.

  • Main aisles: need at least 36 inches clear width
  • Secondary aisles: at least 32 inches
  • Turning areas: allow 60 inches for wheelchair turns

If your store is small, go vertical—tall and narrow cases (160–180cm height, 40–50cm depth) keep products visible without eating up floor space.

If your store is large, spread out—multiple smaller cases often work better than one giant case. Smaller cases open up the floor and let you display more product categoriesCommon Sizes at a Glance

One More Thing—Plan for the Future

Your inventory will change. New products will come in. Seasonal displays will need space.

Buy a case that gives you room to grow. Adjustable shelves help. Modular designs let you add more cases later.

And if nothing off-the-shelf fits your store perfectly—custom is always an option. A custom display case matches your exact measurements, your brand colors, and your product types.
