Fiberglass Props vs Wood: Why Mall Kiosks Prefer FRP

If you are confused about whether to use wood or fiberglass props for the mall kiosks, pop-up stalls or display items, just say the answer: Currently, most mall kiosk projects choose FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) instead of wood. Fiberglass is lighter, more durable, and can create shapes that wood cannot. It is also easier to meet fire safety and maintenance requirements. Wooden props simply won’t last long in a busy mall environment. Let me explain each point separately.

Handling and manual labor – don’t underestimate the weight of the task

Most shopping mall kiosks are not permanently fixed in one place. For weekend events, holidays, and brand changes, they need to be moved. Even a 1.2-meter-long wooden counter made of solid wood is difficult for two adults to lift.

However, lightweight fiberglass props are different. Fiberglass can be made into hollow structures with a wall thickness of 3-5mm, and the overall weight is 40%-60% lighter than the same-sized wooden material. One person can push a wheeled FRP kiosk to change its position, without the need for a mover. This difference is very sensitive for the mall operators when calculating labor costs. Many projects did not pay attention to this at the beginning, but later found that moving twice a month, the transportation cost of the wooden kiosks was higher than the props themselves. Therefore, more and more people are now looking for lightweight fiberglass props for mall kiosks.

When it comes to design flexibility, wood simply cannot compete

Many mall kiosks display props require arc shapes, rounded corners, brand mascots, three-dimensional characters or streamlined shells. To achieve such shapes with wood, CNC engraving and subsequent assembly are necessary. The joints need to be filled with putty, polished and painted, which takes a long time and is prone to cracking. FRP is molded in one piece by the mold, regardless of how complex the curved surface is, after demolding, it is a complete and integrated piece without any joints, and the surface is smooth.

We have fabricated a custom fiberglass kiosk for a milk tea brand. The entire shell is a large arc combined with an extended small bar counter. The woodwork quote is 20 days, while the FRP mold-making and production take 12 days to complete. The result is cleaner. For designs like curved fiberglass props with large arcs and continuous turns, the woodworkers often make them with edges and corners, but FRP can reproduce them very accurately.

Durability: the shopping mall environment is harsher than you think

The shopping mall is not a showroom. Hundreds or thousands of people pass through every day. Beverages spill, children get kicked, cleaners splash water while mopping, and the air conditioning vents blow directly. Wood is afraid of moisture and bumps. Once the surface paint peels off, the inside absorbs water and expands, causing the door panel to deform over time. FRP has a layer of gel coat on its surface, which is waterproof, corrosion-resistant, and scratch-resistant. Even if it is scratched by a key, it won’t affect the internal structure. We call this durable mall kiosk material.

You might wonder, will fiberglass-reinforced plastic be very brittle? Actually, as long as the resin and glass fiber layers are controlled properly during production, its toughness is fully sufficient for the daily use of the shopping mall. Weather-resistant fiberglass props placed near entrances and exits, in areas with temperature differences, are also fine. Maintenance-wise, wood needs to be repainted and waxed regularly, while FRP can be wiped clean with a damp cloth, making it truly maintenance-free fiberglass props. Don’t underestimate this. After the shopping mall closes at night, the cleaning staff have limited time, and no one wants to take care of the props every day.

Fire safety compliance is a hard requirement

The property management of the shopping mall strictly controls the fire resistance ratings of the decoration materials. Ordinary wood is classified as flammable material. Even if it is coated with fire-resistant paint, over time the coating will age and there may still be problems during fire safety inspections. FRP can be made by adding flame retardants to the resin to create fire-rated FRP props, meeting the B1 level or even higher requirements of the shopping mall.

This is particularly important for chain brands – when the same design is replicated in different cities’ malls, each venue’s wooden props must undergo separate fire-resistant treatment. The reports are also not uniform. FRP comes with a unified fire resistance standard from the factory, eliminating a lot of hassle. Many procurement teams for shopping center projects directly specify fire-rated FRP props for shopping malls, because they don’t want to go through repeated troubles in the fire safety inspection process.

Consider both costs and long-term returns—don’t just look at the price quote

Just looking at the first cost, wooden props might be cheaper because no molds need to be made. But if you need 3, 5, or even more identical kiosks, the mold cost for FRP is lower when divided among multiple items. Moreover, wooden props need major repairs or replacements after only one or two years of use, while FRP props remain as good as new after three or five years. Adding in labor costs for transportation, maintenance, and fire safety improvements, the cost-effective advantages of fiberglass props become evident.

Many contractors working on mall kiosk projects now directly approach fiberglass props manufacturers to place large orders in bulk because they know that the client will open new stores later, and the molds can be reused, resulting in a larger profit margin. The orders for FRP kiosk props wholesale have increased significantly in the past two years, especially from chain tea, beauty, and digital accessory brands. They don’t just consider the first purchase price; instead, they look at the average daily cost over three years.

A real-life comparison I witnessed

Last month, I visited a shopping mall in a second-tier city. There were two stalls adjacent to each other. The one on the left was a wooden pavilion selling handmade soaps, and the one on the right was a glass-fiber shell booth selling digital accessories. The wooden one had been open for about half a year. The edges near the ground had peeling paint, and there were scratches at the door handle position. The glass-fiber one had been open for over a year. Apart from a bit of dust on the surface, the shape and color were still intact.

The mall’s operations supervisor told me that the wooden stalls need to apply temporary fireproof coatings before each fire inspection. They have been reminded twice already. This comparison is not to say that wood is completely unusable. Rather, if you are operating in a commercial space that is frequently used, requires movement, and needs to pass fire inspections, fiberglass props display are obviously more convenient. The warm feeling of wood is advantageous in furniture stores or long-term fixed exhibition halls, but in a mall kiosk environment with a fast pace, the practicality of FRP is overwhelming.

A real-life comparison I witnessed

If you are planning to set up mall kiosks, pop-up stores, brand display areas, or need to replace the existing wooden props, we can directly produce custom fiberglass props. We are a factory that has been manufacturing fiberglass props for many years. From design communication, mold making, shaping, sanding and coloring to packaging and shipping, we handle everything as a one-stop service.

You just need to send the size diagram or reference photos, and we will provide you with the mold fee, unit price and delivery date. Even if you haven’t determined the plan yet, you can also have a chat to see if glass fiber can achieve the shape you want. Leave a message or send us a private message. You can send in English or Chinese. We usually reply within 24 hours. Don’t wait until the wooden props in the mall have problems before replacing them. At that time, it will be the rent and customer flow that are affected.
